Features

Engines

The new Citroën C4 is available with a choice of 2 petrol engines and 2 Diesel engines.  The new 1.6L Petrol and 1.6L Turbo Petrol engines are matched to a four speed automatic gearbox, the 1.6L Diesel engine is paired with a 6-speed semi-automatic (EGS) gearbox, and the 2.0L Diesel is available with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

While the new Petrol engines have been co-developed with BMW and deliver increased power for maximum driving pleasure while significantly keeping emissions and fuel consumption to a minimum, the 2.0L 16 valve turbo diesel engine also packs some serious power delivering 100kW of power at 4000rpm for a maximum torque of 320Nm at 2000rpm. The overboost function increases the maximum torque to 340Nm at full engine load.

Citroën C4 will give you even more driving pleasure by adapting to your driving style, delivering comfort as well as enhancing fuel economy.

Six-Speed EGS Gearbox System

The C4 1.6 HDi is available with a new cutting edge six-speed electronic gearbox system delivering high levels of driving comfort and pleasure as well as enhancing fuel economy. It's a revolutionary alternative to normal manual and automatic transmissions.

Choose between modes: in "manual", you can change gear using either paddles on the steering wheel, or the sequential lever. In "automatic" mode the transmission will control gear changes for you, maximising drive comfort and optimising fuel consumption helped by the addition of a sixth gear.

For a sportier drive you can also use the additional "sport" mode for responsiveness, and a "hill-start" mode will make up-hill starts more convenient.

With no need for a clutch pedal, and the chosen gear always displayed on the instrument panel, we have kept everything simple, giving you a high tech transmission for a superb drive.

Auto-adaptive Transmission

The Citroën C4's sequentially controlled automatic gearbox constantly analyses all the different driving parameters in order to select the most appropriate gear. The sequential mode of the gearbox makes it possible to go up and down the gears by simple fingertip pressure on the control lever.

The instrument cluster displays the programme selected (auto-adaptive, sport or snow) or the gear used in the sequential mode.

For increased safety, the gearbox features a "shift lock" function to prevent the driver shifting from park position without applying the brakes. At the same time, a buzzer sounds when the driver opens the door without first placing the gear lever in the PARK position.

The auto-adaptive automatic transmission with sequential shift option is available in 4-speed for petrol models and 6-speed for diesel.

High Performance Brakes

The C4's braking system features ventilated discs at the front and discs at the rear, combined with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

To further improve braking safety, the C4 is fitted as standard with emergency braking assistance (EBA) and automatic hazard warning lights.

ESP (electronic stability programme) and ASR Traction Control are standard across the new C4 range. ESP monitors the car's progress through a bend. If oversteer or understeer is detected, ESP automatically modifies the engine's torque and applies the brakes to maintain stability and control. ASR Traction Control assists to reduce wheel spin for better traction.

Suspension

The running gear of the C4 offers precise handling, while also effectively contributing to active safety. The front suspension features a MacPherson type strut with lower wishbones and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension features a flexible transverse beam associated with an anti-roll bar. Damping control is adapted to optimise the balance between comfort and handling.

Depending on the level of trim and the engine, the C4 is available with 16-inch wheels and 205/55R16 tyres, or 17-inch wheels with 205/50R17 tyres.

Generous interior dimensions

Intelligent use of interior space is a Citroën signature.  The interior dimensions of the new C4 ensures class leading comfort for all passengers, whether seated in the front or back.  Along with ample space, the interior is designed with quality finishes to be practical and safe.

From the dashboard to the consoles and door panels, the interior of the C4 possesses generous stowage, including: a vast glove box, bins in the doors, can-holders, a drawer under the front passenger seat and nets on the backs of the front seats. A split folding rear seat provides a flexible, modular boot space.

Seating

The seating in the C4 has been designed for maximum comfort and minimum fatigue. The new C4 features "comfort" front seats and the driver and passenger seat headrests are height adjustable on the 1.6L models and height and tilt adjustable on the 2.0L models. The steering wheel is height and tilt adjustable for optimum driver comfort. The optional leather electric driver's seat* on the 1.6L Turbo Petrol and the 2.0L Diesel includes a two position seat memory and heating controls for both front seats. An optional leather pack which features heated front seats is also available.

The rear seat of the Citroën C4 can be folded 2/3 - 1/3 - both seat cushion and backrest. Each part of the backrest and the cushion can be folded down to free up extra space. Modularity goes even further: the rear seat base can be removed so that the boot can be loaded right up to the front seat.

Pertinent settings

In addition to the conventional seat settings (fore-and-aft adjustment, angle of back rest), the C4 also includes a number of other settings to ensure that all the occupants can find a position to suit their body shape and driving habits:

The C4 can also be equipped with an electrically controlled driver's seat. In this case, the settings of the seats and exterior rear-view mirrors can be memorised to enable different drivers to immediately find their preferred settings.

Power Steering

Variable-assistance power steering is standard. The level of assistance is linked to engine speed in order to obtain a level of power adapted to conditions of vehicle use. Power steering is firmer at high engine speeds for increased safety, and lighter at low engine speeds for easy manoeuvring.

Multiplex Electronics

Audio Volume

The audio volume adjusts itself automatically, to provide you with a consistent level of sound, irrespective of the speed at which you are driving.

Speed Limiter and Cruise Control

A speed limiter coupled with the cruise control prevents you from going beyond your set speed unless you deliberately "kick-down" the throttle or cancel it. Cruise Control allows you to maintain a desired speed without using the accelerator. However, the speed can be increased or decreased, and cancelled or reinstated at any time by using either the pedals or the fixed centred controls on the steering wheel.

Multi-function Screen

Shows the time, date, outside temperature, radio station locations, the volume level and features RDS txt showing the name of a song being played when broadcast by the radio station.

It also shows the trip computer details and is the display showing the status of various functions of the car. Different warnings are clearly shown on the multi-function screen and accompanied by a specific sound alarm.

Trip Computer

The on-board computer constantly keeps track of all of the driver-useful information such as the distance that can still be travelled using the remaining fuel, distance travelled, average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel consumption and average speed.

Automatic Lights

An electronic sensor is used to detect low light levels, at dusk or in a dark car park, and switches the headlights on automatically.

Automatic Wipers

Available on all models the automatic rain-sensitive front windscreen wipers adapt the wiping speed to the intensity of the rain. As a safety precaution, the wiper system is deactivated approximately 1 minute after the ignition has been switched off. On switching on the ignition to reactivate this function return the stalk to the Stop position and move back to the auto wipe position. Activation of the function is identified by one sweep of the wipers.

The Citroën C4 's rear wiper activates automatically when the reverse gear is engaged and the front wipers are on.

Automatic Locking of Doors and Boot

For security the C4 can be programmed to lock the doors and boot automatically when the car drives off. They unlock when a door is opened.

Bluetooth

The C4 can be factory ordered with a Bluetooth hands-free telephone system in which the address book is displayed on the vehicle's multifunction screen.

This hands-free telephone system, based on Bluetooth wireless technology, is integrated with the passenger compartment.

Bluetooth is a convenient and safe option for making personal in-car calls from a mobile phone, since the driver can make calls without taking the phone out of his pocket. In this way, he can make phone calls from the car without taking his eyes off the road or releasing the wheel.

To make a hands-free call, the driver uses the ergonomic control function on the wheel, and the microphone built into the roof. Conversations are relayed over the C4's audio system.

The driver selects the name of a correspondent from the address book of his mobile phone, using the steering wheel controls. He can also use the "voice recognition" function to initiate a call.

The phone directory and the name of the correspondent are displayed on the vehicle's multifunction screen.

Bluetooth is an option available by special factory order on all Citroën C4's and it is not compatible with the optional JBL Hi-Fi system.

Climate Control

Air conditioning is standard on all C4 models. The 1.6L Petrol, and the 1.6L Diesel models feature air conditioning with a pollen filter and electric air re-circulation controls. The 1.6L Turbo Petrol and the 2.0L Diesel models include dual-zone adjustment, which means the front passengers can have their own temperature settings. This system includes a pollen and pollutant gas filter and the electric air re-circulation is activated by a push button on the steering wheel.

JBL Sound System

JBL, one of the world's leading audio specialists, has developed a hi-fi system especially for the C4. The new system is designed to offer customised acoustics of superb quality.

The hi-fi system comprises six loudspeakers, together with a subwoofer that is fitted in the boot. The presence of the subwoofer in the boot provides wraparound sound quality and an extremely faithful reproduction of musical material.

The system is controlled by an amplifier located under the drivers seat. This unit is parametered with the acoustic settings defined and optimised for the cabin of the C4. Both driver and passengers enjoy excellent sound quality, along with acoustic reproduction that is perfectly adapted to their environment in all circumstances.

This optional JBL Hi-Fi sound system is only available by factory order on some models.

Style

Exterior Style

The dynamic redesigned front end styling and integrated chevron grille is familiar, yet instantly fresher and more appealing.  The new C4 doesn't look like an ordinary car.

At the front, your eye will be drawn to the unique boomerang curve of the headlamps.  Boldly designed and instantly recognised, they sweep elegantly into the front wings.  Smoothly integrated into a new grille design, the chrome double chevron logo helps to create a sharper, more dynamic front end.

The style of the C4 is characterised by decisive architectural choices. Its height is limited in order to optimise aerodynamics, road behaviour and fuel consumption. In consequence, powerful and fluid design lines emerge as the key traits qualifying the C4.

Interior style

The innovative C4 cockpit design offers an abundance of space and light and functionality.  This, combined with innovative design and high quality materials, create a cosseting and spacious driving experience.

The new C4 boasts the perfect layout.  Everything is where it needs to be for optimal safety, comfort and sheet enjoyment.  The unique, intelligent simplicity of the interior layout makes the new Citroën C4 a travelling environment like no other.

Stylish and ever more practical, the distinctive centred ‘head-up’ display has been carefully rethought.  All vital driving information is now included and is clearly visible at a glace.  Citroën’s trademark fixed-hub steering wheel ensures that all important controls and lights remain fixed in one spot for easy and quick operation at all times.

Adjustable seats, new trim level options, climate control, automatic lights and rain sensitive wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror, and an on-board trip computer are just some of the intelligent features available.

Driver-dedicated steering-wheel display

All vital driving information is now included and is clearly visible at a glance.  The ‘head-up’ instrument display is centred in the dash and now incorporates the rev counter, allowing all driving information to be clearly visible from the one display.

The multifunctional fixed-centred controls steering wheel offers the following advantages:

Fixed-centred steering wheel controls

Citroën's trademark feature, the fixed-centred control steering wheel, places driving aids within easy reach of the driver.  Thanks to the fixed centre steering wheel, all the important controls remain in the same position and are quickly and easily accessible.

Citroën’s innovative fixed hub steering wheel is designed for increased safety and functionality at your fingertips and also ensures that the air-bag always deploys at the optimum angle.

Some of the functions and controls are:

The horn is on the lower part of the steering wheel.  Conventional driving functions (lighting and wiping) maintain their usual layout, with standard stalk switches.

Luxurious leather

For an added touch of luxury, leather packs are available on the C4 Exclusive models with a choice of Mistral black leather, or Lama light grey (beige) leather.   The leather pack includes leather seats, door panels, gearshift cover and steering wheel, heated front seats, dipping side mirrors when reversing and 2 plip keys. Plus 8-way electronically controlled drivers seat with lumbar adjustment and seat memory function.

The leather pack is available on;

Panoramic full glass roof

Light and sunshine are welcome on board in your new C4 thanks to the optional panoramic full glass sunroof, increasing the sense of vitality for the driver and passengers and giving the vehicle an atmosphere of its own. For days when the roof is not required there are blinds that close from the front and back to close off the interior from the glass roof.

Scented Air Freshener

A scented air freshener, styled to match the dashboard design, also contributes to the relaxed onboard atmosphere.

The air freshener is available to purchase with a choice of nine fragrances: Citrus and Passion, Amber and Sandalwood, Cinnamon and Ginger, Lotus flower, Vanilla, Jasmine and Mimosa, Soft Lavender, Mint and Musk, Ylang and Bamboo. All these fragrances were developed by Robertet, a company specialising in the creation of perfumes.

Placed on the central air vent, the scented air freshener diffuses the fragrance selected through the air conditioning system. A knob lets the user switch the system off or adjusts the quantity of perfumed air.

The perfumes come in the form of sealed, individual cartridges, so the fragrance can be changed at any time. A cartridge lasts around 45 days, based on three hours of daily use and are available to purchase from the Citroen network.

Safety

The sheer depth of safety technology throughout the new C4 makes it a very well protected place to be.  This is not only true for its occupants, but also for other road users and pedestrians.  The new C4's interior design focusses on ensuring that all driver controls are easily accessible without taking your eyes off the road, or losing concentration.  One example of this is the use of Citroën’s innovative fixed hub steering wheel, which is designed for increased safety and functionality at your fingertips and also ensures that the air-bag always deploys at the optimum angle.  A wide range of passive and active safety devices are offered as standard on the new C4.  Some of these include;

5 star protection

Not only is the Citroën C4 a five star car in the Euro NCAP crash tests, the harshest independent crash test in the world, the C4 has also recorded the best ever result in the pedestrian accident test, which examines how well a car minimises injuries to a pedestrian struck by a car.   Overall the new C4 achieved 5 stars for front impact, 4 stars for child safety and 3 stars for pedestrian safety. This makes the C4 still the highest scoring vehicle in the small family car segment in all 3 categories.

The front end of the Citroën C4 may be stylish, but has also been designed to minimise the impact on any pedestrian that has the misfortune to be struck by a C4. Under the skin there are two shock absorbers behind the bumper specifically installed and positioned to reduce leg injuries, the bonnet is shaped so that there are no hard spots to cause upper-body injuries and the bonnet is made from aluminium with deformable sections to limit injuries to pedestrians.

The boomerang shaped headlights are not only a key styling trait on the C4, their placement also contribute to pedestrian protection.

Impact Protection

To satisfy the most stringent passive safety evaluation requirements, Citroën conducted extensive studies on protection from frontal impact.

Moreover, to reduce repair costs following minor impacts, the C4 features plastic front wings and an aluminium front upper bumper beam, which is integral with the impact absorbers. In the event of impact, the beam and impact absorbers crumple, without damaging the cantrails. The same is true for the lower bumper beam, which will crumple without damaging the engine subframe or its extensions.

Six airbags

The C4 boasts the world's first shape-optimised driver airbag. This feature, which relies on the fixed central section of the steering wheel, maximises driver protection. This system adapts to the severity of impact: if impact is minor, only one stage of the airbag will deploy, for high-level protection. The C4 features 6 airbags in total: curtain airbags as standard at front and rear, plus driver and passenger side airbags standard.

ABS

The C4's braking system features ventilated discs at the front and discs at the rear, combined with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).  ABS prevents the wheels locking under heavy braking, EBA deploys full force of braking pressure in emergencies, and EBD distributes braking pressure between all wheels to maintain stability.

EBA

Research shows that many drivers fail to brake with full force in an emergency. Emergency Braking Assistance (EBA) compensates for this by automatically maximising application of the brakes when strong braking is initially detected.

ESP + ASR traction control

Additional reassurance comes from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which monitors the car's progress through a bend and, if oversteer or understeer is detected, automatically modifies the engine's torque and applies the brakes to maintain stability and control. The ASR traction control optimises traction and prevents wheel spin by acting on the brakes of the driving wheels.

Seatbelts

Citroën C4's five seats all have 3-point inertia reel seatbelts. There is a seatbelt "unfastened" warning light and audible sound for each seat occupied with seatbelt not fastened.

The front seatbelts are fitted with pyrotechnic pretensioners with force limiters. The rear seatbelts also have force limiters and the front seat belts are height adjustable.

Automatic hazard lights

If you decelerate rapidly, the hazard warning lights come on automatically to warn drivers behind you; they go off when you accelerate again or you can switch them off manually.

Tyre pressure sensors

Available as an option on the 1.6L Turbo Petrol and the 2.0L Diesel models, the low tyre-pressure warning function enhances the range of safety equipment present on the C4. This system constantly measures the pressure of all four tyres. Each tyre is fitted with an emitter and a pressure sensor, which sends information to the central control unit.

When one of the tyres drops below its preset pressure level, a message immediately flashes up on the multifunction screen to warn the driver. At the same time, a buzzer sounds. In the event of a puncture, the "Stop" indicator will also come on. In this way, this feature detects any under-inflation that could have an adverse impact on the car's stability and on the safety of the occupants.

In addition to improving safety, this function also encourages the driver to check tyres regularly and to correct inflation levels. These checks bring gains in terms of reduced driving noise, fuel consumption and tyre wear.

Front & Rear Park Assist

Front and rear park assist sensors contribute to added safety when parking or reversing your car. The system alerts the driver as to the proximity of objects either behind or in front of the car.  Excellent for inner city driving.

Security

Remote control plip & child locks

The high frequency remote control key not only locks and unlocks the doors and boot, it controls the "guide me" function which provides temporary illumination of the headlights. It can be used to close the windows when the car is already locked, activate the hazard lights to locate the vehicle, and if fitted, the key memorises the electric settings for the driver's seat and the rear view mirrors.

The Citroën C4 is well protected against theft and break-ins. The range features a new generation transponder immobiliser, deadlocks, central locking and a remote control plip as standard. For extra security, if the high frequency control system is accidentally operated and unlocks the car but the doors or boot are not opened within 30 seconds, the C4 automatically relocks itself. As added protection for occupants and their luggage, the C4 locks automatically when the vehicle reaches 10 kilometres per hour and remains locked until a door is opened or the ignition is switched off.

The dashboard displays the status of child locks and allows their activation or deactivation at the simple touch of a button.

Antitheft wheel bolts

C4's fitted with alloy wheels have as standard antitheft wheel bolts on each alloy wheel. All models can also be fitted with an optional facto order perimetric and volumetric alarm. These antitheft wheel bolts are VIN coded and unique to each car.

Alarm

All models can also be fitted with an optional facto order perimetric and volumetric alarm.

"Guide me" function

The "guide me" function provides light for added security. If the lights are on when the car is turned off they will stay on for a period of time to light the area in front of you. The headlights can be turned on and off from the plip key so when walking toward the car in the dark the headlights can be turned on from a distance.
